Fine layers of silk arranged as a square of approx 24cm. These can be split down into finer layers for dyeing and are easy to work with for spinning or incorporating into felt pieces.

A silk hanky is created from a silk cocoon. Each cocoon is degummed and soaked, then stretched out onto a square frame. The silk squares are then stacked on top of each other and dried. An average silk hanky is made up of approximately 20 cocoons. Each thin layer of silk can be peeled off one by one and use for multiple applications including dyeing, wet felting and spinning. 

To prepare the silk hanky for spinning, peel away one layer and from the centre of the square, pull the fibres apart until it forms a long roving and then breaks once. This roving can now be twisted and tied up.
